Guide
What “may contain” means
A “may contain” status is a warning signal from mapped catalog tags — not a guarantee about every package on the shelf.
Trace-style warnings
SafeBite maps Open Food Facts traces tags to May contain for the matching Big 9 allergen. That usually reflects language like shared equipment or possible traces — not a confirmed ingredient line.
Contains wins
If the same allergen is both listed as an ingredient (contains) and as a trace warning, SafeBite shows Contains. A stronger status is never demoted to “may contain.”
Facility advisories are separate
When a product page shows a facility advisory, that line is orthogonal to contains / may contain / unknown. An unknown facility advisory is normal and is not a safety clearance.
Not medical advice. Always verify the physical package label. Missing allergen data is unknown — never treat unknown as safe or allergen-free.
