How to read a SafeBite result
A product page is a structured checklist for US packaged foods. The package in your hand is still the source of truth.
Read the three statuses
- Contains — plan as if that allergen is present.
- May contain — treat as a cross-contact style warning until the package says otherwise.
- Unknown — look at the ingredients and allergen statement on the package. Do not assume absence.
Then verify the package
Formulations change. Catalog rows can lag. Always match the barcode and wording on the physical US label before buying or serving food.
Photos are evidence, not automatic truth
If you submit label photos or a dispute, those images help a reviewer compare the package to the barcode. They do not by themselves rewrite allergen statuses. Only an admin approval with explicit per-allergen choices updates the catalog.
Not medical advice. Always verify the physical package label. Missing allergen data is unknown — never treat unknown as safe or allergen-free.
